Merja Castrén
Merja Castrén is an artist and designer, who has focused on ceramics as her main material. In addition to art, she makes small batches of ceramic utility items and jewellery. She has also designed glass works and blown glass in various glass studios. She may also combine ceramics with other materials such as wood, glass, metal and leather.
She gets her inspiration from nature and especially from Lapland, which is like a second home to her. Castrén is interested in natural phenomena, their effects and human as part of nature. She plans exhibitions around different themes of nature, such as extreme phenomena caused by climate change, biodiversity and the vulnerability of forests. Castrén has held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both at home and abroad since 2015.
She works in her ceramics studio at the Cable Factory in Helsinki and in her home studio in Siuntio. She has works in the HUS art collection and in several private homes in Finland and abroad.
